Woke up today at 07.50 am of the sound of som very loud worshiping down the hall. I tried to press the ear plugs futher in, but it didn't help. So what to do when all you want is to sleep, but thers a meeting a few meters away from your room, wich by the way is not isolated, so you can hear everything that's going on, and people are singing songs as loud as they can...? I'll tell you, you try not to be to angry and try to acsept that you are in their country and culture and that this is the way they do it. Kristina's first reaction to the singing, was:"Audhild, there are pentecostals here!!"
But this was not what I was going to write about. As you may have read about on one of the blogs to my teammates, we had our first meeting with Mathare. Mahare is the second biggest slum in Nairobi. I'v never been to a real slum before, and it was an exsperience I'll not easily forget. The smell of tons garbage hit's you, and people stearing at you, kids running after you trying to hold you hand and touch you while they'r shouting "How are you? How are you? How are you?".
The houses was not bigger than 3x3, and they was made out of tin plates. We was told that in one house, or a shack as I would call it, it could live about 6-10 people. And here we are, having a hole house with one room each. We met a woman sitting outside her house/shack with one of her kids. She didn't say anything and looked very sick. We were told that she used to sell water from a sink, but since it's drouht in Kenya she no longer had a income, neighter could she get water to herself and her kids. The place where they use to get water had no more water left. And not long from Mathare there is a realy richt neighbourhood where they have water 24/7. The world is unfair. We visitated the Mathare Worship Center, one of the places we'r gonna work at to christmas. Mathare Worship Center is a school and a daycarecenter for kids living in Mathare. We were together with the children in one of their breakes, and when we was going outside with the children, everyone wanted to hold my hand and drag me along the way. It was hard to try not to run over the kids. They were all over! They where fighting over each other to trie to hold our hands. One girl started to cry just because she could'nt hold my hand. I had no problem feeling aksepted and loved.
We also visited the daycare. It was a smal shack with madrasses in the middle of the rom. Some children were sleeping on the madrasses others were awake. I think it could have been about 20 children there, in a little shack. The kids had dirty clothes and they didn't use diaper so many of the kids was wet.
I'm looking forward to work there and get to know the kids.
